Amit Mishra has taken the most hat tricks in IPL history: three, in 2008, 2011 and 2013, each for a different franchise. Yuvraj Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal are next with two apiece. No other bowler has more than one.

From the first season in 2008 to the end of IPL 2026, the league has produced 23 hat-tricks by 19 different bowlers. The most recent was Chahal's for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on 30 April 2025. No bowler took a hat-trick in IPL 2026.

What counts as a hat-trick in IPL

A hat-trick in IPL cricket means the same as in any format: one bowler takes wickets with three consecutive deliveries. The three balls do not have to come in the same over, and several IPL hat-tricks were split across two.

Run-outs do not count, because the wicket is not credited to the bowler. Stumpings do, even off a wide, which is how one IPL hat-trick was completed in only two legal deliveries.

Who has the most hat tricks in IPL?

Amit Mishra: three hat-tricks for three teams

Mishra's first came for Delhi Daredevils against Deccan Chargers in Delhi in 2008, when the leg-spinner finished with 5/17. His second, in 2011, came for Deccan Chargers themselves, against Kings XI Punjab at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, with figures of 4/9. The third followed in 2013 for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Pune Warriors India in Pune. Three hat-tricks, three seasons, three different shirts.

Yuvraj Singh: two in a single season

Yuvraj is the only bowler with two IPL hat-tricks in the same season. Both came for Kings XI Punjab in South Africa in 2009. The first, in Durban, removed Robin Uthappa, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher. The second came against Deccan Chargers in Johannesburg a little over two weeks later.

Yuzvendra Chahal: two four-wicket overs

Chahal's first came for Rajasthan Royals against KKR at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in 2022. In one over he had Venkatesh Iyer stumped, then removed Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi and Pat Cummins with consecutive balls. He finished with 5/40 and RR won by seven runs.

Three years later he did something similar for Punjab Kings at Chepauk. MS Dhoni was caught early in Chahal's 19th over, then Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad fell to the last three balls. CSK went from 184/6 to 190 all out, and Punjab won by four wickets.

The first IPL hat-trick

Lakshmipathy Balaji took the first, for CSK against Kings XI Punjab at Chepauk on 10 May 2008. He removed Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla and VRV Singh with consecutive balls on the way to 5/24, and CSK won the match.

Mishra and Makhaya Ntini added two more before that first season was over. Only 2008, 2009 and 2017 have produced three hat-tricks, the most in any IPL season.

IPL hat-tricks with a twist

Two legal balls: Pravin Tambe, 2014

Tambe, a leg-spinner who was 42 at the time, had Manish Pandey stumped off a wide against KKR in Ahmedabad. He then caught Yusuf Pathan off his own bowling and trapped Ryan ten Doeschate lbw. Because the first wicket came off a wide, the whole hat-trick took just two legal deliveries. RR won by 10 runs.

Split across two overs

Rohit Sharma, bowling occasional spin for Deccan Chargers at Centurion in 2009, took Abhishek Nayar and Harbhajan Singh with consecutive balls in the 16th over, then JP Duminy with the first ball of the 18th. He finished with 4/6 against Mumbai Indians, the franchise he would later captain.

Shane Watson's 2014 hat-trick against Sunrisers Hyderabad was split the same way: Shikhar Dhawan with the last ball of one over, then Moises Henriques and Karn Sharma with the first two of his next.

Sam Curran's in 2019 was the most dramatic. He removed Harshal Patel with the last ball of the 18th over, then bowled Kagiso Rabada and Sandeep Lamichhane with the first two of the 20th. Delhi Capitals slid from 144/3 to 152 all out and lost by 14 runs. Curran was 20, the youngest bowler to take an IPL hat-trick, beating Rohit's record from 2009, when he was 22. Nobody younger has done it since.

Two on the same day: 14 April 2017

Samuel Badree took one for RCB against Mumbai Indians in the afternoon game in Bengaluru, removing Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McClenaghan and Rohit Sharma. Later that day in Rajkot, Andrew Tye, playing his first IPL match for Gujarat Lions, dismissed Ankit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary and Shardul Thakur with the first three balls of the final over. Tye's 5/17 made him the first bowler to take a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul on IPL debut.

Defending the last over: Jaydev Unadkat, 2017

Sunrisers Hyderabad needed 13 off the final over with four wickets in hand. Unadkat dismissed Bipul Sharma, Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the second, third and fourth balls, finished with 5/30, and Rising Pune Supergiant won by 12 runs.

Hat-tricks that didn't win the match

A hat-trick does not guarantee a win. Yuvraj's against RCB in 2009 ended in an eight-run defeat. Sunil Narine's at Mohali in 2013 left Kings XI Punjab at 99/6, yet Punjab still beat KKR by four runs. Watson's side lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 32 runs.

Badree's hat-trick left Mumbai at 7/4 chasing 143, but Kieron Pollard's 70 took them home by four wickets. And Rashid Khan, captaining Gujarat Titans in place of Hardik Pandya in 2023, removed Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Shardul Thakur in the 17th over. KKR still won by three wickets after Rinku Singh hit Yash Dayal for five sixes off the last five balls.

Shreyas Gopal's 2019 hat-trick of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Marcus Stoinis came in a rain-reduced five-over game in Bengaluru. Rain returned, the match was abandoned as a no result, and RCB were knocked out of the playoff race.

Hat-trick takers who were also victims

Four IPL hat-trick takers have also fallen in someone else's. Rohit took his in 2009 and was Badree's third victim in 2017. Harshal Patel was part of Curran's in 2019, then took his own against Mumbai Indians in 2021, removing Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Rahul Chahar. Rashid fell in Unadkat's in 2017, six years before taking his own. And Sunil Narine, whose hat-trick came in 2013, was Rashid's second victim in 2023.

IPL hat-tricks by team and season

By our count of the table above:

  • Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab / Punjab Kings bowlers have five each.
  • RCB bowlers have three: Praveen Kumar, Badree and Harshal Patel.
  • Kolkata Knight Riders have been on the receiving end four times, more than any other team.
  • No hat-trick was taken in 2015, 2018, 2020, 2024 or 2026.
