Short square boundaries, a fast outfield and a surface that usually gives true bounce: in Bengaluru, edges fly over the rope and good shots race away. That combination is the heart of this Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch report, and it makes bowling here hard work.

It shows up in the results. Over the IPL's history, chasing sides have won clearly more games here than teams batting first. In IPL 2026, they won four of the five matches played in Bengaluru, including two chases of more than 200.

Bowlers are not helpless, though. Seamers can find movement early, and bowlers who mix hard lengths with well-disguised changes of pace can still control an innings. The margin for error is simply small.

The ground: why Bengaluru plays small

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is run by the Karnataka State Cricket Association and is home to Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Karnataka team. Its listed capacity is about 40,000, which makes it compact compared with India's biggest venues.

The size of the field is the big story. Square boundaries are usually reported as around 65 metres, and the pockets behind square are shorter still. A batter who picks the right angle needs much less power here than at a large ground, which is why bowlers try to make batters hit straight.

The ground also has an unusual drainage system. In 2017 it became the first cricket ground in the world fitted with a SubAir subsurface aeration and vacuum drainage system, which can draw about 10,000 litres of water a minute out of the outfield. It is designed to get the outfield playable again quickly once the rain stops.

On 4 June 2025, 11 people died in a crowd crush outside the stadium during RCB's title celebrations. The stadium was then deemed unfit for large gatherings, and its 2025 Women's World Cup matches were moved to Navi Mumbai. After safety upgrades and an expert-committee review, the Karnataka government approved IPL matches there in March 2026. RCB played five home matches here in IPL 2026 and two in Raipur.

M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch report: how it plays in the IPL

The surface is generally flat and true. Previews describe it as one of the best batting pitches in the league, with some early lateral movement for seamers who hit the deck. Once the shine goes, there is rarely much sideways movement or sharp turn, and the short boundaries do the rest.

The long-run IPL average first-innings score is in the mid-to-high 160s. The records show how far beyond that a good night can go:

Record Figure Match
Highest IPL total 287/3 Sunrisers Hyderabad v RCB, 2024
Highest RCB total 263/5 v Pune Warriors, 2013
Highest total in IPL 2026 250/3 RCB v Chennai Super Kings
Lowest completed total 82 RCB v Kolkata Knight Riders, 2008
Highest individual score 175* Chris Gayle v Pune Warriors, 2013

The 2024 game sums up Bengaluru. Sunrisers made 287/3, RCB answered with 262/7, and still lost by 25 runs. At the other end, RCB's 82 against KKR came on the IPL's opening night in 2008, and no team has been bowled out for less here in a full game since.

Why par is hard to pin down

IPL 2026 undermined the idea of a "safe" total. Sunrisers Hyderabad's 201/9 on the opening night was chased with more than four overs to spare. Gujarat Titans made 205/3 and still lost with seven balls left. RCB's 175/8 against Delhi Capitals was chased as well, as was Lucknow Super Giants' 146. The only side to defend a total was RCB, and they needed 250/3 to beat Chennai Super Kings by 43 runs.

So a first-innings score that looks big elsewhere is often only par in Bengaluru. Teams batting first need to keep attacking through the middle overs, because two 200-plus targets were hunted down here in IPL 2026 alone.

Batting or bowling first at the Chinnaswamy

Most captains who win the toss here choose to bowl. The numbers back the habit: to the end of IPL 2026, chasing teams had won about 56 of 104 IPL matches at the ground and teams batting first about 44, with the rest tied or washed out. With boundaries this short, no target looks out of reach, and the chasing side knows exactly what it needs.

Pace or spin: what works for bowlers

New-ball pace. The first few overs are the bowlers' best window. Seamers who hit a hard length and move the ball off the seam can take early wickets before the batters settle.

Changes of pace. Once the ball softens, pace on the ball helps batters. Bowlers who take pace off with cutters and slower balls, and bowl to the longer straight boundaries, tend to concede less.

Spin. Spinners get little turn here on most nights, so control matters more than spin. A slow bowler who keeps the ball full and straight can tie batters down, but anything short or wide disappears over the short square boundaries.

The common thread is accuracy. At a bigger ground a slightly wrong ball might go for a single. Here it often goes for six.

ODIs and Tests in Bengaluru

The ground's ODI history matches its T20 reputation. India's 410/4 against the Netherlands at the 2023 World Cup is the highest ODI total here. At the 2011 World Cup, India and England tied on 338 each, and a few days later Ireland chased 328 to beat England, led by Kevin O'Brien's famous hundred.

Tests can be very different. In October 2024, after the first day was washed out, India chose to bat in overcast conditions and were bowled out for 46, their lowest Test total at home. New Zealand's seamers did the damage, and New Zealand went on to win by eight wickets. That Test is a reminder that conditions on the day can change how this ground plays.

Conditions: evening storms and the SubAir effect

Bengaluru's climate is relatively mild, but the March-to-May summer brings fairly frequent thunderstorms, usually in the late afternoon or evening. That is exactly when IPL games are played.

Because the SubAir system is built to clear water quickly, a storm may mean a delay and fewer overs rather than a washout, although persistent rain can still wipe out a game. That happened on 17 October 2026, when a T20I between India and West Indies was reduced by rain and then abandoned without a result. In a shortened game, the side batting second knows exactly what it needs from fewer overs, and on a ground this small that can encourage it to take more risks.

Dew can also play a part on some nights, and a wet ball is harder for bowlers to grip and control.

Where the venue fits in a CricGuru prediction

Start with a question the model cannot answer: how much will this ground change the match? At the Chinnaswamy the answer is often "a lot", yet CricGuru's AI prediction does not see it. The prediction is built from recent form, head-to-head record, league-table strength (points per game) and a small home advantage, and it comes with an AI-written preview. The pitch, how this particular ground plays, the weather, the toss and dew are not inputs.

To get one, find the fixture among CricGuru's live and upcoming matches, sign in on the match page and request the prediction (a free account includes a few trial predictions; paid plans add a daily allowance). Then adjust for Bengaluru yourself. Does one side bat deeper, on a ground where 200 has not been safe? Is a storm likely to shorten the game and narrow the gap between the teams? And which attack has accurate death bowlers and good changes of pace, rather than relying on raw speed or big turn?

Squad lists and recent results are on the CricGuru teams page, and our guide on how to predict cricket matches explains how to weigh form against conditions.

FAQ

Does the Chinnaswamy pitch favour batters or bowlers?

Batters. The surface is true, the outfield is quick and the square boundaries are short. Bowlers have their best chance with the new ball, and the October 2024 Test against New Zealand showed what seamers can do under cloud.

Does the Chinnaswamy pitch help pace or spin?

Pace gets some help early, when seamers can move the ball. After that, neither type gets much from the surface, so accuracy, slower balls and bowling to the longer straight boundaries matter more than speed or turn.

What is a good score at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the IPL?

The all-time average first-innings score is in the mid-to-high 160s, but that is out of date as a target. In IPL 2026, totals of 201 and 205 were both chased, and only 250/3 was defended. Batting first, teams should aim well beyond 200.

What is the highest IPL total at the Chinnaswamy Stadium?

Sunrisers Hyderabad's 287/3 against RCB in April 2024 is the highest. RCB's best is 263/5 against Pune Warriors in 2013, the match in which Chris Gayle made 175 not out.

Why was the Chinnaswamy Stadium in doubt before IPL 2026?

On 4 June 2025, 11 people died in a crowd crush outside the stadium during RCB's celebrations of their first IPL title. The ground was then deemed unfit for large gatherings, and Bengaluru lost its 2025 Women's World Cup matches to Navi Mumbai. After safety upgrades and a review by a state-appointed expert committee, the Karnataka government approved IPL matches there in March 2026. It hosted five RCB home games in IPL 2026, including the season opener.
